Ransomware is getting sneakier and smarter. The latest example comes from ExecuPharm, a little-known however significant outsourced pharmaceutical business that confirmed it was hit by a brand-new type of ransomware last month. The attack not just secured the business’s network and files, hackers also exfiltrated huge quantities of information from the network. The business was handed a two-for-one threat: pay the ransom and get your files back or don’t pay and the hackers will post the files to the internet. This new technique is shifting how organizations think of ransomware attacks: it’s no longer simply a data-recovery mission; it’s also now a data breach. Now business are torn between taking the FBI’s guidance of not paying the ransom or the worry their copyright( or other delicate internal files )are published online. Education giant Chegg validated its third data breach in as many years. The most recent burglary affected past and present personnel after a hacker stole 700 names and Social Security numbers. It’s a drop in the ocean when compared to the 40 million records taken in 2018 and a concealed number of passwords taken in a breach at Thinkful, which Chegg had simply acquired in 2019. Those 700 names represent about half of its 1,400
full-time employees, per a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
