Steven Cox is the creator and CEO of Take Lessons, a venture-backed startup that connects trainees with instructors of the arts, academics and foreign languages, in your area and online.
#ThePlaybook host David Meltzer talks with Cox about the origins of Take Lessons. Cox also talks about the realities of entrepreneurship and how they differ from the misconceptions. Cox offers lessons of his own, advising entrepreneurs to think in themselves, however not their buzz– to not take their self-promotion too seriously and to be able to see that they can be incorrect sometimes.
To do this, Cox recommends, entrepreneurs need to wear both the” creator “and” financier”hats as they grow their company. Cox discuss how he began Take Lessons after helping his rock band’s drummer discover work as a music instructor and how remaining active, listening to clients and adapting enabled his business to discover product-market fit before running out of money. Cox and Meltzer also chat about how running a service compares to baseball, with the expectations shifting while the video game remains the exact same with time. Cox discusses that, at 12 years into running Take Lessons, he’s now concentrated on making sure financiers more than happy and preparation for the next five years.
