Metalenz reimagines the camera in 2D and raises $10M to ship it
As excellent as the cams in our smartphones are, they’re fundamentally restricted by the physical needs of sensing units and lenses. The concept is […] In the case of a cam, the main parts are of course a lens (these days it’s typically a number of stacked), which corrals the light, and an image sensor, which senses and measures that light. The problem faced by cameras now, especially in mobile phones, is that the lenses can’t be made much smaller sized without seriously impacting the clarity of the image. The thing at the bottom is the chip where the image processor and reasoning would be, but the meta-optic could also integrate with that. To be clear, Metalenz isn’t looking to replace the main video camera on your iPhone– for conventional photography functions the conventional lens and sensor are still the method to go.
