Bustle Digital Group, owner of a portfolio of digital media residential or commercial properties including Bustle itself, says it laid off 2 dozen staffers today. That includes removing the entire staff of The Outline, a culture site that it
acquired a year ago. In a declaration, a BDG spokesperson stated the business will continue to host The Overview’s archives, and that founder Josh Topolsky will be”checking out alternative courses forward” for its future.
“The unmatched effect of COVID-19 has actually forced us to make some hard company choices,” a BDG representative stated. “Many personnel will be taking momentary tiered salary reductions and unfortunately, we have removed 2 lots positions throughout the company.”
Topolsky (former editor in chief of Engadget and founder of The Brink) founded The Summary in 2016. The website shifted its publication design in time, laying off its writers while maintaining an editorial team that continued to release freelance content. It was then obtained by Bustle, and Topolsky went on to release the tech news website Input under the BDG umbrella.
” [I] am enormously pleased with all the strange, amusing, interesting, and dazzling things we took into deep space, and all the skilled writers we had the ability to publish,” The Outline’s managing editor Leah Finnegan tweeted this morning.” [T] hank you for reading, and [I] hope you will remember what we did fondly.”
BDG, on the other hand, was founded by CEO Bryan Goldberg (envisioned above) in 2013. In the past few years, it hasn’t simply acquired The Overview, but also Elite Daily, Mic, Nylon and Gawker. Oftentimes, the offers came after layoffs or other chaos. We’re entering what’s likely to be a brutal couple of months (or longer)for
the media market, as the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a dramatic pullback in advertising. The layoffs have currently started, while BuzzFeed istrying to prevent them by cutting staff member pay.
