When she was a participant on the top Chef, food business owner Carla Hall remembers a defining minute that altered her outlook on the program– and life. She was standing at the judges’ table and her heart was beating out of her chest, sure she will be sent home. “And after that I just had this thought,” remembers Carla, “Wait, no one has actually ever died here.”

That perspective enabled her to unwind and stop stressing over things out of her control, and she unexpectedly started performing much better. Carla states she carried that lesson of getting comfortable with being unpleasant into her organization, whether that means learning how to do things she never ever did in the past, or asking and stopping for assistance from her group. “Your group will not see it as an indication of weak point,” she says. “They will be empowered by it.”
