Ever explored an apartment and fell in love with the model unit?
You’re not alone. Harvard Organization School grad Cameron Johnson is a former institutional real estate investor and Greystar exec turned startup founder who understood that very typically, “occupants would try to lease the design home.”
This got him believing. Individuals would like to lease a design home in a structure, and nobody likes to move. This spelled opportunity in Johnson’s mind.
So in 2017, he developed the idea of Nickson, a Dallas-based start-up that totally provides apartment or condos as needed.

‘”However Nickson doesn’t just supply furniture such as sofas and beds, it provides all the essentials too — — from extension cords to pots and pans to silverware to drape rods. By partnering with a range of sellers, the startup claims that it allows users “to make their brand-new areas move-in prepared in as little as 3 hours.”
Users take a style test and share apartment layout details. Nickson’s designers develop a preliminary design based upon the measurements of a house, wanted functions (such as work from home) and the volume of home furnishings based upon a person’s way of life. Once the layout is complete, Nickson produces a customized style, consisting of all home furnishings and house goods.
Upon registering, users pay a one-time setup fee for the furniture-as-a-service offering, and after that a regular monthly subscription charge for the duration of a lease — — beginning at $199 a month for a studio to $500 a month for a three-bedroom house. The startup likewise offers concierge services such as a family supply starter set and maid service, as an add-on to its flat month-to-month subscription.
Nickson is presently just live in the Dallas market, however plans to expand into other cities over the next 12 months, consisting of broadening its beta tests in Austin and Houston. And it’s just raised a $12 million Series A to help it bear down that objective.
A fund managed by Pendulum Opportunities LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pendulum Holdings LLC, led the Series A round, which likewise consisted of involvement from Motley Fool Ventures, Transformation’s Increase of the Rest and Backstage Capital.
The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted the worldwide supply chain, resulting in shipment delays for customers. Nickson has acquired items with time that it stores as regional stock, making it a lot more appealing to tenants who do not wish to handle delays and searching down furnishings and fundamentals, Johnson stated. The convenience Nickson uses resulted in its user base growing 700% in 2020 compared to the year prior, he included.
Robbie Robinson, co-founder and CEO of Pendulum, said his firm was drawn to buy Nickson due to a mix of Johnson’s “vision, secular shifts toward leasing and membership consumption and the business’s disruptive organization design.” (Robinson is President Barack Obama’s former monetary advisor, and recently established Pendulum to invest $250 million in founding start-ups of color).
Kabir Ahmed, vice president at Pendulum, added that he believes Nickson’s model transcends to the principle of renting one-off furnishings pieces in that it offers an “end-to-end, turnkey service.”
“This seamless experience is extremely distinguished and provides an engaging worth proposition for the customer,” he stated.
Of course, Nickson is not the only company trying to turn the stodgy furnishings rental industry on its head. Other start-ups providing similar services as Nickson include Oliver Space, Fernish and The Landing.
Nickson claims that it stands out from the competition in that it “takes care of everything” beyond furnishings (consisting of art work and toilet brushes) and that it can curate area and bring it all in before a tenant even reveals up.
“No other competitor in this area offers this level of turnaround, detail or service,” Johnson says. “You can actually come to your brand-new home with a luggage and tooth brush, and it’s prepared to ‘‘ live in.'”
