Rutter, a remote-first company, is establishing an unified e-commerce API that makes it possible for business to connect with data across any platform.

On Friday the company revealed it was emerging from stealth with $1.5 million in financing from a group of financiers consisting of Haystack, Liquid 2 and Basis Set Ventures.

Founders Eric Yu and Peter Zhou satisfied in school and began working on Rutter, which Zhou called “Plaid for commerce,” in 2017 prior to going through the summer 2019 Y Combinator cohort.

They stumbled upon the e-commerce API concept while working in education technology in 2015. The pair were producing membership kits and learning materials for moms and dads concerned about how their children would be learning during the global pandemic. Then their vendor consumers had issues listing their stores on Amazon, so they wrote scripts to help them, however found that they had to compose separate scripts for each platform.

With Rutter, consumers just require one script to connect anywhere. Its APIs link to e-commerce platforms like Shopify, Walmart and Amazon so that tech customers can build functions like customer assistance and chatbots, Yu told TechCrunch.

Lan Xuezhao, founding and handling partner of Basis Set Ventures, stated via e-mail that she was “very thrilled” about Rutter first due to the fact that of the founders’ enthusiasm, grit and speed of version to a product. She added it advised her of another team that effectively developed a service from zero to over $7 billion.

“After seeing them (Rutter) for a couple of years, it’s clear what they developed is effective: it’s the main nerve system of online commerce,” Xuezhao included.

As the creators see it, there are two huge explosions going on in e-commerce: the platform side with the adoption of headless commerce– the separating of front end and back end functions of an e-commerce website, and new business coming in to support merchants.

The brand-new financing will allow Yu and Zhou to develop their team, consisting of employing more engineers.

Due to the company officially launching at the start of the year, Yu did not disclose profits metrics, but did state that Rutter’s API volume was tripling and doubling in the last few months. It is also supporting merchants that connect with over 5,000 stores.

Some of Rutter’s consumers are developing one aspect of commerce, like returns, checkouts and warranties, however Yu stated that considering that Shopify represents just 10% of e-commerce, the business’s objective is to take merchants beyond the marketplace by being “that combined app store for merchants to discover items.”

“We believe that in the future, the e-commerce stack of a merchant will look like the SaaS stack of a software application business,” Zhou added. “We want to be the glue that holds that stack together for merchants.”
