JumpCloud, the late-stage start-up that is improving the concept of business directories in a cloud context, announced a $159 million Series F financial investment on a healthy $2.56 billion evaluation today.

Sapphire Ventures led the round with brand-new investors getting involved including Owl Rock, Whale Rock Capital, Sands Capital and Undertaking Driver along with existing financiers General Atlantic, BlackRock and H.I.G. Development Partners. The business has now raised practically $356 million with $259 million coming over the most current 2 rounds.

JumpCloud CEO Rajat Bhargava states that investor interest in the business is driven by his belief that the directory structure is the center of an IT organization, specifically as it connects to identity, and that includes mobile device management, single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, fortunate access management and identity governance. He sees all these techniques coming together in the directory structure.

“Our company believe that those are all part of one core directory site platform. When you think of a directory really holistically and broadly, it is really about firmly and frictionlessly connecting users and their identities to whatever they may require to gain access to,” Bhargava informed me.

They do this by pursuing SMBs and mid-market companies with a cloud item that simplifies the management of these complex systems. Jai Das, who is managing director at lead investor Sapphire Ventures, believes that this part of the marketplace was being primarily excluded of directory services because of that intricacy prior to JumpCloud and others attempted to fill the void.

“Big enterprises have actually put in place numerous directory and security options to resolve these issues, however with big financial investments in tech outlays and IT support groups. SMBs and mid-sized business do not have the big budgets or big staff to replicate the big enterprise model,” Das stated. He adds that developing for this market is a substantial difficulty because it requires “constructing a product with all of the features large enterprises need, plus it has to be easy to use, simple to release and not [be] terribly costly.”

While the business is not revealing any revenue metrics, Bhargava did say that they have added 2000 customers given that we last spoke in November for an overall of 5000, and he said that the company ought to double head count by the end of the year from the 300 last November.

He also stated that he has been making progress at developing a varied company, and one way he does that is just asking every hiring manager if they talked to historically underrepresented candidates.

“The easy act of just asking that question makes such an enormous distinction inside of a company. We’ve encouraged all of our employing supervisors to speak with varied prospects however we also when there’s an offer about to be made, or when they’re in the [interview] process, we are asking did you speak to [varied] prospects. And after that if you didn’t, we’re going to ask you to go, look for those folks [prior to making a working with decision],” he said.

Bhargava didn’t want to speak about and IPO when we spoke last year, and not much changed this time around. “We’ll see. It’s simply not part of what we’re worried about or focused on,” he stated.

He did indicate however, that with such a considerable amount of money on the balance sheet, he would think about some strategic acquisitions. “We will focus on M&A and where it makes sense will incorporate various parts and groups into our business,” he stated. With a tight labor market, that might be about adding engineering, as well as including performance to the platform, he said.
